Leah

Leah has a personality similar to Zach's. She's so funny and loves to make you laugh. Gretchen was giving her a bath and she kept tilting her head and smiling. It was too cute.

One thing she thinks is so funny is when she takes her paci out of her mouth and tries to stick it in your mouth. Why is that so funny? lol She also loves to be chased and loves to chase you.

She still has not gotten any teeth in. She's been kind of fussy lately and had a slight fever for several nights in a row. Hopefully that's because she'll be getting some teeth soon. The dentist said that she'll be fine unless she gets to be 2 years old and still doesn't have any teeth. Then, we'll need to worry.

We're having a hard time breaking Leah of always wanting Gretchen. Corey slept with her last night (instead of Gretchen) and she woke up every 2 hours crying for Gretchen. She's definitely a "Mama's girl"!! She likes to follow Gretchen into the kitchen and stay right by her side while she's cooking and/or cleaning. Needless to say, this next one will be in the crib from day one!

Zach & Leah check-ups

Both Zach and Leah had their check-ups today with the doctor. Both are very healthy and on the right track. Zach weights 61 lbs and is 4 feet 1 inch tall. He is in the 96th percentile for both his height and weight. Leah is 23 lbs and 29 1/2 inches long. She is in the 86th percentile for her weight and the 63rd percentile for her height. The doctor said that could change, though.

We had pictures of the kids done over the weekend. We got Zach's 6 year pictures done and Leah's 1 year pictures done. We also got holiday pictures with both of the kids. It's been such a busy month for us. Ever since Halloween, Gretchen has been really busy.

We put the Christmas decorations up the weekend before Thanksgiving. Gretchen's parents came down to visit for Thanksgiving weekend. Then, her and her Dad went shopping on "Black Friday". That same day, we had Leah's 1st birthday party. We were able to squeeze in a date that night while her parents watched the kids. Then, we had pictures on Saturday morning and more shopping. Today was the doctor's appts for the kids.

The pregnancy has been going well. We're still scheduled to have the c-section on February 4, 2010. Gretchen failed her 1 hour glucose test and had to do the 3 hour glucose test 2 days before Thanksgiving. We haven't heard the results of that but are pretty sure she'll pass. She had the same thing happen when she was pregnant with Leah.

Gretchen has gotten all but 1 present completed and wrapped for the kids for Christmas. So, now on to baking. :) We'll try to update some pics and video on here as soon as we get a chance. We shouldn't be AS busy ESPECIALLY since most of the shopping is done. :)

Many things happening...

Well... let's start with October. Corey went on a hiking trip to the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina from October 15-18th. He went with a group of guys from another church. He had a lot of fun! Gretchen and the kids missed him so much while he was gone. Then, he had 1 day off of work after he got back and then they had "shut down" at his work from October 22nd-29th. This was one of the hardest shut downs for him. They had a REALLY hard job they had to do and Corey worked 12 to 13 hour days every single day. He is still recouperating from it. While Corey was hiking and working so much, Gretchen decided to do school with Zach to try to get in as many days as possible before the baby comes. Since Corey was going to be gone and we didn't have any plans, it just made sense to go ahead and do school.

Then, Gretchen's parents came down from October 30th-November 3rd to celebrate Zach's birthday. We had Zach's 6th birthday party at the Children's Museum. It was a lot of fun and so many of Zach's friends came to celebrate with him! He was very excited and had a GREAT birthday! We can't believe he's 6 already.

For halloween, Zach dressed up as Prince Caspian and Leah was a spider. :) We went to our church's "Hallelujah Party" and then decided to take Zach trick or treating for the first time with some friends. He LOVED it!! We really thought a lot about it and decided that growing up, it was just about having fun with friends and getting candy. So, we decided to take Zach this year. It was fun but VERY tiring for us. Plus, we had to go through all of his candy to make sure it all checked out ok, if you know what we mean!!

Anyway, Zach had his last soccer game on November 5th. Today (Saturday) is his "soccer party" where they will go roller skating and eat pizza and give out trophies to all the kids. It should be a lot of fun. Of course, Gretchen can't roller skate since she's pregnant and besides.... someone has to take care of Leah. lol We're hoping Zach will at least TRY to go roller skating since he's never been before. We'll see!!

Other than that, the weeks have been filled with homeschooling, church activities and Gretchen has been giving a lot of piano lessons. She's got 8 students now and possibly more soon. Not to mention doctor's appointments. Gretchen failed her 1st glucose test and now has to go back for the dreaded 3 hour one. Plus, the baby is leaning on her sciatic nerve, which makes it very painful for her sometimes.

Gretchen is getting the itch to start "Christmas decorating". So, it looks like we might start putting up some decorations this weekend. We've got Leah's birthday coming up on Thanksgiving and Gretchen's parents coming back down for that. So.... there is lots to do!!

Another BOY!

Gretchen went to the doctor's on Wednesday for an ultrasound. Corey was so sweet to take off work and go with her. We found a babysitter, Mimi Connie, to watch the kids for us and we made it a "date day" together. We did the same thing when she was pregnant with Leah.

We found out that we are having ANOTHER boy!! It's funny because Zach wanted a baby sister when Gretchen was pregnant with Leah. So, he prayed every night for a baby sister and God answered his prayer. This time he's been praying for a baby brother. So, it looks like Zach gets his prayers answered a lot!!
We've already scheduled the c-section for February 4, 2010. It's really neat, though, because this baby (Lord willing) will be born on February 4th, Gretchen's Dad birthday is February 6th and Gretchen's birthday is February 8th. So, we'll have 3 birthdays all within a couple of days of each other!

Gretchen's skin

Within the past month, Gretchen has gotten a pretty bad skin rash from scratching so much. She has scratched so much that she has scabs all over her. It started on the back of her neck and the elbow of her left arm along with part of her forearm. It has now spread to her chest and is starting to go to her shoulders. The doctor thinks she's allergic to the new hormones going into her body from the pregnancy. The doctor told her to take benadryl or zyrtec, as long as it isn't a de-congestant, and to put hydrocortizone on the areas 3 times a day.

The benadryl seems to make her drowsy and the zyrtec doesn't seem to work as well as the benadryl. She bought the strongest hydro-cortizone cream possible but it makes the areas sting b/c of the open wounds from scratching and it seems to make her itch even more after it's dried. She bought some Gold Bond medicated anti-itch cream that seems to be giving her some relief so far. She goes back to the doctor next week to see how the rash is doing. If it's not better, the doctor plans on sending her to the dermatologist.

Please pray that this will go away. She is miserable and we don't want to spend more money going to a dermatologist if we don't have to.

New school hours

Gretchen just found out from a friend who is also homeschooling that she doesn't HAVE to teach for 4.5 hours per day. You only have to do that if you are going through the public school system to homeschool. Since we're apart of a homeschool association, we're apart of the "third option" which means as long as we have 180 days of school and certain subjects (which we're doing all of them) then we don't have any stipulation as to how long or short school has to be. Gretchen was so relieved of that.

So far, she likes homeschooling. We're thinking of putting Zach into school next year since we'll have 2 little ones but Gretchen doesn't want to make that decision until she has to. As of now, she wants to homeschool next year too and already has most of the curriculum anyway. So, it only makes sense.

Busy Summer

We have had a VERY busy summer. We've either gone to the movies, the library, the Children's Museum, out with friends, to a barbeque, to the beach or to church all summer long. Plus, Gretchen started homeschooling Zach last week. So, add that to the list of activities and school HAS to be AT LEAST 4.5 hours per day or it's not counted to be a school day by law. So, Gretchen is keeping records of the time that she does school with Zach.

Zach is doing such a good job in school. Gretchen is staying very busy with teaching him and planning for the school days. She's got all of her lesson plans done for the year but it looks like a lot of them are going to be changed b/c he's already been taught most of the material in the curriculum. However, she is making sure that he knows it before she goes on. He's just a VERY smart kid. Intellectually, he is probably more in 2nd grade. We just don't want to rush him.

We went to the beach last weekend. It was so much fun and so much easier with 2 adults rather than 1. Gretchen went to the beach with the kids by herself a couple of weeks ago. They had a lot of fun but she said it was a lot of work being by herself.

We will try to update more often but with school going on, it's been hard to find the time. Enjoy our pictures from the beach.

A First...

Today was the first day that Leah stood all the way up by herself to her feet. Here is the evidence.

We're having...

ANOTHER BABY!!! Yes, we can't believe it either but we're excited!

Gretchen is due February 11, 2010. We don't know yet if she'll have to have a c-section or if she'll be able to have a VBAC. We'll see once she goes to the doctor's. We'll try to post some pics of our trip soon. Sorry for the delay. Gretchen has been really tired lately!!

Zach's sickness....

Last week we had a pretty scary thing happen with Zach. Gretchen was upstairs and Zach called for her to come down to the bathroom where he was at. Zach had just gone pee and right afterward his penis started bleeding. So, Gretchen took him to the doctor immediately.

They had to do a urinalysis and they had to draw blood. The urinalysis showed blood in his urine, but not visibly only by testing it. The drawing blood part was a horrible experience. He watched them put the needle in his arm, which made things so much worse. Then, it obviously hurt and he pulled his arm back which jerked the needle out of his arm. He screamed so loud and then was crying so hard that he couldn't breathe. Leah started crying with him. He told Gretchen that he didn't want to do it but Gretchen told him that he had to and that she was right there with him. So, he ended up sitting on her lap. She kept telling him not to look at the needle but you know how curious kids are. Finally, she got him calmed down after he starred at the wall and didn't look at the needle. He was still shaking when he was getting in the truck to leave. What a little trooper!!

The doctor went ahead and put him on an antibiotic that afternoon b/c he figured it was some kind of infection. When he pressed on Zach's abdomen, Zach felt some pain. So, the doctor's office called on Monday and said that his bloodwork came back positive for strep infection. They said just to continue taking the antibiotics and he should be fine.

We are so thankful that his body showed some sort of sign so that we knew something was wrong. Sometimes, people don't show any signs of strep infection and it can be fatal infection. We're so glad he's on the mend now. Although, he thinks just b/c he's not bleeding anymore that he doesn't have to take the medicine. Boy is he wrong!!! lol

Vacation and Sickness

Back at the end of April we went to Phoenix, AZ for a week. Gretchen's parents have timeshare out there so we met them and their friends out there to vacation together. Plus, it was nice to have a free babysitter. ;)

Over the next few days/ weeks we'll share things about our vacation but for now, we'll start with what happened on our journey home and when we got home.

We were scheduled to leave Phoenix, AZ to go to Dallas, TX at 12:40 p.m. but didn't end up leaving until 3 p.m. b/c of the bad weather in Dallas. Anyone remember all that bad weather they had when the dome collapsed? Well... that's when we were traveling there. Once we finally landed in Dallas, our connecting flight home was delayed. They finally decided to cancel our flight around 9:30 p.m. So, we had to stand in line for over 2 hours to try to get a flight back home for the next day.

To make a long story short, by time we finally got a flight scheduled for the next morning it was already after midnight. So, we got cots and blankets from the airport and stayed the night with 2 small children at the airport. Oh.. and Corey had the flu during all of this with a 103 degree fever. Well, Gretchen and Zach stayed up all night and Corey and Leah got some sleep.

So... the next morning we go to get on our flight but they tell us that our tickets are invalid. They had dropped our seats and only had 2 available seats. Well, that wasn't going to work. So, they ended up getting us on a flight at 1 p.m. that afternoon. It was a LONG journey home from Phoenix. We won't ever fly American Airlines again b/c of the horrible service that we received through all of this.

When we got back home, we picked up dinner and went to our house. After we ate, about 20 minutes later Zachariah started vomitting. Zach and Corey went to the doctor the next day and found out that they had the flu. Zach tested positive for it but Corey tested negative. The doctor said that Corey probably tested negative because he was on the back end of it. Gretchen ended up getting a bad headcold later that week but was fortunate enough to escape the flu. WHEW!

So, we are all FINALLY feeling back to normal and now are enjoying spending time with Gretchen's parents and her Aunt Debbie this Memorial Day weekend! We will tell more about our vacation later and will post pictures!! :)

Leah- 4 months

We took Leah to the doctor for her 4 month check up on March 26th. She weights 17 lbs 2 oz. and is 27.5 inches long. She is in the 99th percentil for her height and the 98th percentile for her weight. She had to get the same set of shots again that she got for her 2 month check-up. She is VERY healthy and right on target for everything. The doctor is keeping her on Zantac until she is 6 months old. He said she shouldn't need it after that.

She has been doing much better with taking naps. She usually takes 4 hour naps. However, she has reverted back to her old behavior when it comes to sleeping at night. She likes to sleep next to Gretchen whereas she used to go to sleep fairly well in her crib. Zach continues to be such a good big brother to her and loves her so much.

Leah- 2 months

At Leah's 2 month check-up, 2 weeks ago, she was 13 lbs 13 oz. and 25 1/4 inches long. She is in the 95th percentile for weight and 99.8th percentil for height. The doctor said that she is not a fat baby (even though we think she is) but that she is a long baby. She's definitely going to be tall.

The doctor gave her a prescription for Zantac for her reflux. That seems to be helping a lot, with the exception of today and yesterday. She's been extremely fussy the past couple of days. Gretchen went to worship team practice last night and Leah cried the entire 2 hours that she was gone. We think that might have been because she's attached to Gretchen, though, b/c as soon as Gretchen got home she stopped crying. Corey is much more understanding of Gretchen, now, when she tells him that Leah has been fussy or crying all day.
This picture is a frequent face that we see from Leah. lol It's so cute though. :)

3 Year Anniversary!

Today is our 3 year anniversary! We can't believe it!

Corey sent Gretchen red roses while he was at work today! Gretchen gave Corey the movie "Fireproof" along with the book "Love Dare".

We are looking forward to many more to come! :)
